A Decade of Panamanian Fashion.

¡Hola a tod@s! Ya estamos a poco de finalizar el año y la década lo cual me puso a pensar en mis años atendiendo el Fashion Week Panamá y las colecciones que cada temporada dejaron una impresión en mi que aún hoy esta muy presente. Es por eso que en honor a una década de moda panameña he decidido crear una lista de mis colecciones favoritas de cada año.

Algunas cosas a saber sobre esta lista es que en algunos casos la colección elegida es mi segunda opción dado que no quise incluir marcas que ya no están activas, también por que en años distintos una misma marca tuvo mi colección favorita pero no me entretenía la idea de repeticiones en la lista y el 2010 esta ausente dado que se me hizo muy complicado encontrar las imágenes de ese año.

Espero esta selección sea de su agrado y estén pendientes a mis redes sociales pues estaré haciendo más recuentos de fin de año en mi instagram.

Hello everyone! We are already shortly arriving at the end of the year and the decade, which made me think about my years attending the Fashion Week Panama and the collections that each season left an impression on me that is still very present today. That is why in honor of a decade of Panamanian fashion I have decided to create a list of my favorite collections each year.

Some things to know about this list is that in some cases the chosen collection is my second option since I did not want to include brands that are no longer active, also because in different years the same brand had my favorite collection but I wasn´t entertained the idea of repetitions in the list and 2010 is basically absent since I found it very difficult to find the images of that year.

FERNANDA QUIRÓS - PURA JAGUA - 2011.

Inspirada en la cultura Emberá Wounaan y las obras arquitectónicas de Le Corbusier, la mejor colección, a mi consideración, de Fernanda donde muestra de increíble manera como sus dos pasiones diseño y arquitectura se dan la mano para crear un trabajo hermoso, fresco, con tintes modernos y que se sigue sintiendo puramente latinoamericano.

Inspired by the Emberá Wounaan culture and the architectural works of Le Corbusier, the best collection, in my opinion, of Fernanda where it shows in an incredible way how her two passions design and architecture go hand in hand to create a beautiful, fresh work with modern strokes and still feeling purely Latin American.

GRETA BAYO - AURORA BOREALIS - 2012.

Siempre he sentido que Greta Bayo es una diseñadora cuyo estilo se mueve más hacia el lado comercial de la moda, aunque eso no quiere decir que no tenga bellos momentos de diseño en sus colecciones. Para mi su colección del 2012 fue un éxito en todo sentido siguiendo su linea usual pero elevada lo suficiente para que cada pieza se sintiera única e interesante sin perder la funcionalidad. Esto nuevamente se volvió a ver en su colección Guapa algunos años más adelante que también la considero estar entre sus mejores propuestas.

I have always felt that Greta Bayo is a designer whose style moves more towards the commercial side of fashion, although that does not mean she does not have beautiful design moments in her collections. For me, her 2012 collection was a success in every way following its usual line but elevated enough for each piece to feel unique and interesting without losing functionality. This was again seen in her Guapa collection a few years later, which I also consider to be among her best proposals.

TATIANA ULIANTZEFF - LUZ ARCANA - 2013.

Tatiana tiene un estilo muy identificable y siempre es muy elegante aunque no teme ser sexy. Su colección del 2013 tuvo ese balance perfecto que la convirtió para mi en una colección tan bien trabajada que fácilmente pudo competir en un plano internacional. Otra de mis colecciones favoritas fue su propuesta en el Macrofest 2017 con una linea de diseño fiel a su estética pero más actualizada que sigue informando mucho su diseño actual.

Tatiana has a very identifiable style which is always very elegant although she is not afraid to be sexy. Her 2013 collection had that perfect balance that made it such a well-worked collection for me that could easily compete on an international level. Another of my favorite collections was her proposal at the 2017 Macrofest with a design line true to its aesthetics but more up-to-date that continues to inform much of the brand´s current design.

VERÓNICA ÁNGEL - LA KUNA VITA - 2014.

Debutando en el 2014 la colección de Verónica Ángel fue precisamente todo lo que amo ver en una nueva marca creatividad, modernidad y una identidad solida desde el primer diseño. Si bien sus creaciones hoy día han evolucionado a ser un poco más sencillas y versátiles ese ojo critico para elegir espectaculares estampados y materiales se mantiene intacto y es lo que me hace tener expectativa por cada una de sus colecciones.

Debuting in 2014 Verónica Ángel´s collection was precisely everything I love to see in a new brand creativity, modernity and a solid identity from the first design. Although her creations today have evolved to be a little simpler in design and more versatile, that critical eye to choose spectacular prints and materials remains intact and is what makes me have expectation for each of her collections.

SOUSA PITTI - ARABESQUE - 2015.

Otro debut de Fashion Week Panamá que me encantó con una propuesta que mostró los códigos de esta diseñadora con sus juegos de volumen y estructura. La marca gradualmente ha transicionado a crear piezas de corte más cercano a lo casual y funcional pero la arquitectura técnica en sus diseños sigue muy presente y le da ese toque distintivo a su marca.

Another debut from Fashion Week Panama that I loved with a proposal that showed the codes of this designer with her volume and structure play. The brand has gradually transitioned to creating pieces closer to the casual and functional style but the technical architecture in its designs is still very present and gives this brand a distinctive appeal.

LIDIA MINOTA - BLOOM - 2016.

Para mi esta fue la colección que causó un punto de cambio en la forma que esta diseñadora maneja su marca. Una propuesta muy solida con diseños usables pero siempre con un toque especial. Hay algo hermosamente femenino en su forma de diseñar y es una diseñadora que siempre atrae a mucha gente a sus presentaciones lo cual hace obvio el trabajo que ha puesto en posicionar su marca en la mente del consumidor panameño.

For me this was the collection that caused a point of change in the way this designer handles her brand. A very solid proposal with wearable designs but always with a special touch. There is something beautifully feminine in her way of designing and she is a designer who always attracts many people to her presentations which makes obvious the work she has put in positioning her brand in the mind of the Panamanian consumer.

MICHELLE NASSAR - SPRING/SUMMER - 2017.

Si bien su colección del 2015 llamó mi atención y estuvo entre mis favoritas de ese año no fue hasta ésta que realmente me sorprendió por que mostró un crecimiento como diseñadora fantástico. Para ser bien honesto cuando inicié mi camino en la moda panameña su marca la consideraba bonita pero nada impactante, así que fue una bocanada de aire fresco ver su progresión que inicio en el 2015 y encontró en el 2017 una estética maravillosa que ha mantenido hasta el día de hoy.

While her 2015 collection caught my attention and was among my favorites of that year, it was not until this one that I was really surprised that she showed a fantastic growth as a designer. To be very honest when I started my way in Panamanian fashion, I considered her brand to be beautiful but unimpressive, so it was a breath of fresh air to see its progression that began in 2015 and found in 2017 a wonderful aesthetic that has maintained until today.

JOHN BEJARANO - RETRO/NOUVEAU - 2018.

John sin duda ha tenido momentos empezando por su colección del 2012 que introdujo su línea pret-a-porter con una estética completamente nueva para la marca, después en el 2015 con la que podría decirse fue su primera colección realmente exitosa con el público y la del 2018 que vio la marca asentarse en un estilo que lo ha convertido en uno de los diseñadores más esperados del fashion week Panamá, pasando de abordar una estética futurista a un diseño contemporáneo que esta mostrando su versatilidad a la hora de diseñar. 

John has certainly had moments starting with his 2012 collection that introduced his pret-a-porter line with a completely new aesthetic for the brand, then in 2015 with what could be said was his first really successful collection with the public and that of 2018 which saw the brand settle in a style that has made it one of the most anticipated designers of Panama fashion week, moving from approaching a futuristic aesthetic to a contemporary design that is showing his versatility when designing.

DAYRA - SINTIENDO EN TECHNICOLOR - 2019.

Finalizo la lista resaltando otro de mis debuts preferidos en el FWP con la propuesta de la diseñadora Dayra Cardoze. Si bien al inicio estaba algo intrigado ya que aunque su primera colección que presentó mediante lookbook me gustó, la sentí algo repetitiva en los estampados y colores pero su propuesta del 2019 me dejó muy impresionado por el nivel de madurez que mostró en su diseño, su excelente manejo de estampados originales y la idea tan clara que tiene de su marca. No puedo esperar a ver como evoluciona su marca con el paso de los años.

I end this list highlighting another of my favorite debuts in the FWP with the proposal of designer Dayra Cardoze. Although at the beginning I was somewhat intrigued since although I liked her first collection which was shown through a lookbook, I felt it was quite repetitive with the prints and colors but her 2019 proposal left me very impressed by the level of maturity that she showed in her design, her excellent handling of original prints and the clear idea of her brand identitiy. I can't wait to see how this brand evolves over the years.

Espero que la nueva década traiga mejores colecciones, ver a diseñadores nuevos que he estado siguiendo finalmente hacer sus debuts en el FWP y que el medio de moda panameño logre crecer y expandirse brindando la oportunidad a nuestros talentos nacionales y locales de evolucionar mientras llevan la identidad de moda panameña a otras fronteras. También ver el crecimiento de las plataformas de moda alternativas, que más diseñadores reciban apoyo para hacer pasarelas en locaciones o exteriores, que los influencers no solo usen la ropa sino que también inviertan en ella, que los clientes entiendan que los diseñadores panameños no solo existen para hacer trajes de noche (compren el pret-a-porter), que las revistas usen más diseño panameño en sus editoriales y que le paguen a sus colaboradores. Finalmente deseo que la nueva década vea el oficio de la modistería avanzar pues la mano de obra local siempre ha sido un tema difícil y que el Fashion Week Panamá tome nota de Colombiamoda y eventualmente tenga toda las fotos de pasarela para descarga gratis en alta resolución (no tienen idea cuanto se lo agradecería jaja).

I hope that the new decade will bring better collections, see new designers that I have been following to finally make their debuts at the FWP and that the Panamanian fashion medium will grow and expand providing the opportunity for our national and local talents to evolve while carrying the Panamanian fashion identity beyond our borders. Also to see the growth of alternative fashion platforms, that more designers receive support to make catwalks in locations or outdoors, that influencers not only wear clothes but also invest in them, that customers understand that Panamanian designers not only exist to make evening dresses (buy the pret-a-porter), that the magazines use more Panamanian design in their editorials and that they pay their collaborators. Finally, I want the new decade to see dressmaking and tailoring advance since local workforce has always been a difficult issue to tackle and that Fashion Week Panama takes note of Colombiamoda and eventually has all the runway photos for free download in high resolution (they have no idea how much I would appreciate it haha).
