Fashion Week Panama 2019 - The Review - Part 2.

¡Hola a tod@s! Iniciamos el mes de noviembre con una nueva entrada de las pasarelas del Fashion Week Panamá. Algo que me encanta de hacer estas entradas es que he estado muy pendiente de la evolución de los diseñadores locales desde que entré en el medio y es una experiencia muy gratificante ver como las marcas van re-inventándose a medida que pasan los años con algunas iniciando en un punto y encontrando su nicho a medida que maduran, mientras que otras con historia muestran que son capaces de transformar su propuesta año tras año y aún mantener su esencia.

Por supuesto, y es lo que cada año me emociona más, están las marcas que hacen su debut en el evento presentándose ante un público amplio e internacional por primera vez y debo decir que este año casi todas las marcas (el casi lo veremos en mi próxima entrada) pisaron fuerte y supieron establecer sus identidades desde la primera salida.

Como les comenté en la entrada anterior para estas notas sobre el Fashion Week Panamá cuento con la colaboración de fotógrafos y medios que muy gentilmente han accedido a permitirme utilizar algunas de sus imágenes para realizar mis reseñas y los mismos serán debidamente acreditados al final.

Hello everyone! We begin the month of November with a new entry from the runways of Fashion Week Panama. Something that I love in making these entries is that I have been very aware of the evolution of local designers since I entered the medium and it is a very rewarding experience to see how brands are re-inventing as the years go by with some starting at one point and finding their niche as they mature, while others with history show that they are able to transform their proposal year after year and still maintain their essence.

Of course, and that is what excites me the most every year, there are the brands that make their debut in the event presenting themselves to a wide and international audience for the first time and I must say that this year almost all brands (we will see the almost in my next entry) made a statement and knew how to establish their identities from the very first look.

As I mentioned in the previous post for these notes on Fashion Week Panama I´m counting on

José Diaz Jurado - 2020.

José Diaz es un diseñador particular en esta semana de la moda panameña pues si bien es su debut en la misma y podría decirse que su cuarta colección en general, si no me equivoco, es una figura que ha estado en el medio de la moda desde hace mucho y ha llegado a trabajar con figuras del diseño reconocidas en Panamá como Jaime Luna. La colección que nos presentó este año en fashion week fue quizás la muestra perfecta de elegancia clásica para la mujer actual; es un diseñador que sabe perfectamente quien es su cliente y eso le permite crear con una vibra totalmente autentica.

A pesar de que fue una de las colecciones más sobrias nunca se sintió aburrida y aunque muy elegante era notorio que las prendas tenían una cualidad muy versátil tanto en estilo como en edad. La colección contó con detalles de lazos, trajes camiseros, blusas cómodas con cierto toque de volumen en las mangas, chaquetas largas y elementos de sastrería. Veinte años de experiencia lo respaldan y definitivamente se notan. En una nota final sobre este diseñador estoy muy interesado en ver como domina el color y sin duda los estampados los cuales hasta el momento ha utilizado de forma algo reservada.

José Diaz is a particular designer in this week of panamanian fashion because although it is his debut in it and it could be said that his fourth collection in general, if I'm not mistaken, he is a figure that has been in the fashion media since a long time ago and has come to work with design figures recognized in Panama such as Jaime Luna. The collection presented to us this year in fashion week was perhaps the perfect show of classic elegance for today's women; he is a designer who knows perfectly who his client is and that allows him to create with a totally authentic vibe.

Although it was one of the most sober collections, it never felt boring and although very elegant it was notorious that the garments had a very versatile quality in both style and age. The collection featured details like bows, shirt dresses, comfortable blouses with a certain touch of volume on the sleeves, long jackets and tailoring elements. Twenty years of experience back him up and it definitely shows. In a final note about this designer I am very interested in seeing how he dominates color and without a doubt the prints which so far he has used in a somewhat reserved manner.

Sousa Pitti - SS20.

Andrea Sousa ha establecido la estética de su marca de una manera tan solida que no hay que decir que algo es de Sousa Pitti, uno simplemente lo sabe. Los detalles geométricos, las estructuras, los tonos mayormente neutros y el juego de volúmenes son elementos que forman la base de su estética y en esta propuesta, inspirada en el tipo de arquitectura boliviana llamada Cholet, la diseñadora hizo uso de todos esos elementos de manera muy efectiva en general.

Esta es sin duda una de las marcas que con el paso del tiempo he visto ir variando el estilo de diseño desde sus primeras propuestas que tenían muchas piezas elegantes, perfectas para eventos, a crear piezas más relajadas con una facilidad para usar en el día a día que no es tan común ver en el diseño panameño, el cual tiende a ser dominado por la ropa de noche. Si bien siento que algunas telas no jugaron del todo a su favor creo que la colección como tal fue una muy buena propuesta de la diseñadora, de la cual admiro su creatividad y el ojo que ha desarrollado para crear moda para la vida. 

Andrea Sousa has established the aesthetics of her brand in such a solid way that it is not necessary to say that something is of Sousa Pitti, one simply knows it. Geometric details, structures, mostly neutral tones and the play of volumes are elements that form the basis of its aesthetics and in this proposal, inspired by the type of bolivian architecture called Cholet, the designer made use of all these elements in a very effective manner in general.

This is undoubtedly one of the brands that over time I have seen the design style vary from its first proposals that had many elegant pieces, perfect for events, to create more relaxed pieces with an ease to use in the day to day that is not so common to see in Panamanian design, which tends to be dominated by evening wear. While I feel that some fabrics did not worked entirely in her favor, I think that the collection as such was a very good proposal from the designer, from which I admire her creativity and the eye she has developed to create fashion for life.

John Bejarano - La Silhouette - SS20.

Otro diseñador con bastantes años de experiencia John Bejarano es uno de los creadores locales que ha sabido como transformar su marca con los años buscando siempre brindar algo nuevo al público. Creo que esta propuesta es quizás la más fiel a la mujer que inspira su marca, la cual a veces peca un poco de tratar demasiado de ser juvenil. Inspirada en los trabajos de la escultora neozelandesa Anna Korver que exploran la silueta femenina y la cualidad polifacética de la mujer esta colección cuenta con una gran cantidad de detalles como plisados, drapeados, hombros exagerados, estructura, fluidez y sastrería, todo esto mostrando el increíble rango del estilo femenino sin llegar a sentirse enredada o excesivamente recargada.

Las personas que me conocen o han leído mis anteriores entradas sobre los FWP saben que trabajo con este diseñador desde el 2012 pero mantengo siempre mi objetividad a la hora de escribir sobre sus colecciones, en ese espíritu es justo decir que hubieron detalles de styling que pudieron haberse mejorado y hubo una pieza donde el diseñador quiso hacer un drapeado muy experimental que quizás necesitaba un poco más de conceptualización. Aún así debo ser muy honesto al decir que fue una colección que me gusto mucho y requirió un gran esfuerzo por varios retos que surgieron en el camino así que a todo el equipo mis mayores respetos. Adicional es muy agradable que el diseñador esté usando telas como el algodón, creo que el movimiento en crear piezas más versátiles en su uso es la dirección correcta y la carta de colores sin duda fue refrescante para una marca que tiene como base el uso de colores primarios mayormente.

Another designer with many years of experience John Bejarano is one of the local creators who has known how to transform his brand over the years, always looking to bring something new to the public. I think this proposal is perhaps the most faithful to the woman who inspires his brand, which sometimes tries a bit too much to be youthful. Inspired by the works of the New Zealand sculptor Anna Korver who explores the feminine silhouette and the multifaceted quality of women this collection has a lot of details such as pleats, drapes, exaggerated shoulders, structure, fluidity and tailoring, all this showing the incredible female style range without feeling tangled or overloaded.

People who know me or have read my previous FWP entries know that I have worked with this designer since 2012 but I always maintain my objectivity when writing about his collections, in that spirit it is fair to say that there were styling details that could have been done better and there was a piece where the designer wanted to make a very experimental draping that perhaps needed a little more conceptualization. Even so, I must be very honest in saying that it was a collection that I liked very much and required a great effort for several challenges that arose along the way, so to the whole team my greatest respect. Additional it is very nice that the designer is using fabrics such as cotton I think the movement in creating more versatile pieces in its use is the right direction and the color chart was certainly refreshing for a brand that is based on the use of primary colors mainly.

Dayra - Sintiendo en Technicolor - SS20.

Esta diseñadora hace su debut en Fashion Week Panamá presentando su segunda colección y la primera en pasarela causando una muy buena impresión. Si tuviera que definir el estilo de esta diseñadora diría que es simple con toques irreverentes, pues sus creaciones se sienten muy cómodas en su diseño, son fáciles de llevar, son piezas muy versátiles pero siempre encontrarás un detallito muy particular como estampados llamativos, mezclas de diferentes colores, patrones y texturas e incluso cortes los cuales distan de ser solo estéticamente bonitos sino que crean un efecto en la pieza que le da un toque muy especial.

Es una diseñadora que tiene una idea establecida de quien es la mujer para quien diseña y aún así sus piezas no se sienten limitadas a ella, hay una versatilidad en las mismas que muestra un pensamiento maduro sobre la moda no solo como una expresión creativa sino como un negocio y lo que eso conlleva. A mi parecer fue el mejor debut en el FWP en materia de presentar una propuesta bastante solida, estéticamente en línea con su consumidora y que tiene una cualidad que puede ser internacional. ¡Enhorabuena Dayra!

This designer makes her debut at Fashion Week Panama presenting her second collection and the first on the catwalk causing a very good impression. If I had to define the style of this designer I would say that it is simple with irreverent touches, because her creations feel very comfortable in her design, they are easy to carry, they are very versatile pieces but you will always find a very particular detail like flashy prints, mixtures of different colors, patterns and textures and even cuts which are far from being only aesthetically beautiful but create an effect on the piece that gives it a very special touch.

She is a designer who has an established idea of ​​who the woman is for whom she designs and yet her pieces do not feel limited to her, there is a versatility in them that shows a mature thought about fashion not only as a creative expression but as a business and what that entails. In my opinion it was the best debut at the FWP in terms of presenting a fairly solid proposal, aesthetically in line with its consumer and that has a quality that can be international. Congratulations Dayra!

Para finalizar y haciendo una adición al tema que mencioné sobre 'cualidad internacional' creo que es algo que no siempre se hace fácil de encontrar aquí por que algunos diseñadores diseñan con un enfoque tan arraigado a lo que es el clima, estilo y gusto panameño que sus colecciones se sienten muy localizadas y poco competitivas en un mercado más amplio. Siempre he dicho que uno diseña pensando en su nicho pero nunca para complacer al mismo en su totalidad, uno no les da todo lo que quieren por que en la comodidad no hay evolución; uno les da lo que aún no saben que quieren, los reta y les propone. Esto ayuda al diseñador a retar su zona de confort y es fuera de ella donde la evolución, la creatividad y la magia del diseño trascienden fronteras. 

Finally and making an addition to the topic that I mentioned about 'international quality' I think it is something that is not always easy to find here because some designers design with such an ingrained approach to what is the Panamanian climate, style and taste that their collections feel very localized and not very competitive in a wider market. I have always said that one designs thinking of his/her niche but never to please it in its entirety, one does not give them what they want because there is no evolution in comfort; one gives them what they still don't know that they want, challenges them and proposes them. This helps the designer to challenge his/her comfort zone and it is outside of it where evolution, creativity and design magic transcend borders.
