Spring Couture 2020 Highlights.

¡Hola lectores! Hoy estoy de vuelta para hablar un poco sobre la semana de la Alta Costura en París donde se presentaron las colecciones para la Primavera 2020. Sin duda, en notas destacadas, hay que mencionar el retiro de las pasarelas del gran diseñador Jean Paul Gaultier quien después de 50 años hace una reverencia para los libros presentando una colección que re-define y actualiza algunos de sus mayores éxitos a lo largo de su carrera junto con un elenco de modelos, actores, artistas y personalidades que mostraron la increíble diversidad que el diseñador siempre ha apoyado y que dieron ese toque divertido a una presentación que más allá de la emotividad fue una gran celebración al puro estilo del 'Enfant Terrible'.

Hello readers! Today I am back to talk a little about the Haute Couture week in Paris where the collections were presented for Spring 2020. Without a doubt, in outstanding notes, we must mention the finale bow from the catwalks of the great designer Jean Paul Gaultier who after 50 years makes a finale for the books presenting a collection that redefines and updates some of his greatest hits throughout his career along with a cast of models, actors, artists and personalities that showed the incredible diversity that the designer always has supported and who also gave that funny touch to a presentation that beyond emotion was a great celebration in the style of the 'Enfant Terrible'.

Otra nota a destacar fue la inclusión en el calendario de alta costura a los primeros miembros invitados de India y África. Por África, específicamente Camerún, es Imane Ayissi quien mostró una colección que exaltaba los textiles locales e incluía elementos como la rafia y tronco de árbol que fue trabajado para crear aplicaciones. Mientras que Rahul Mishra se inspiró en las plantas acuáticas en contraste con el panorama de Nueva Delhi para presentar una propuesta con un alto contenido de trabajo manual resaltando la habilidad indiscutible de los bordadores indios.

Another note to highlight was the inclusion in the couture calendar of the first guest members from India and Africa. For Africa, specifically Cameroon, it is Imane Ayissi who showed a collection that exalted local textiles and included elements such as raffia and tree trunk that was worked to create applications. While Rahul Mishra was inspired by aquatic plants in contrast to the New Delhi landscape to present a proposal with a high content of manual labor highlighting the undisputed ability of Indian embroiderers.

Y como ya es costumbre no puede pasar la semana de la Alta Costura sin que haga mi pequeña lista de micro-tendencias, que en realidad son aquellas coincidencias de diseño que llamaron mucho mi atención. 

And as usual I can not let the Haute Couture week go by without making my small list of micro-trends, which are actually those design casualties that caught my attention.

Masculine Glamour

Siempre es un placer ver moda masculina en la semana de la Alta Costura pues no es muy común pero siempre he creído que los hombres también merecen un poquito de ese glamour y estética elevada de diseño. Los diseños para caballeros fueron variados con telas brocadas en Georges Hobeika, bordadas en Jean Paul Gaultier o con flecos como en Azzaro, en atuendos que guardaban una cierta elegancia. Otras marcas que también mostraron diseños masculinos fueron Maison Margiela y Bouchra Jarrar.

It is always a pleasure to see men's fashion in Haute Couture week because it is not very common but I have always believed that men also deserve a bit of that glamour and high aesthetic design. The designs for gentlemen were varied with brocade fabrics in Georges Hobeika, embroidered in Jean Paul Gaultier or with fringes as in Azzaro, in outfits that kept a certain elegance. Other brands that also showed male designs were Maison Margiela and Bouchra Jarrar.

Global Inspirations

Ver como lo diseñadores logran interpretar elementos culturales en la pasarela siempre es un placer, claro siempre que se haga de la manera correcta y con apreciación. Imane Ayissi trajo por primera vez la belleza de la artesanía africana a la Alta Costura, mientras que Dior mostró siluetas diáfanas y elegantes inspiradas en las diosas romanas; finalmente Zuhair Murad elevo el factor de brillo y opulencia con su colección inspirada en Egipto. Otros diseñadores notables fueron Franck Sorbier, Elie Saab y Guo Pei quienes se inspiraron en México y los Himalayas.

Seeing how designers manage to interpret cultural elements on the catwalk is always a pleasure, of course as long as it is done in the right way and with appreciation. Imane Ayissi brought for the first time the beauty of African craftsmanship to Haute Couture, while Dior showed diaphanous and elegant silhouettes inspired by Roman goddesses; Zuhair Murad finally raised the factor of shimmer and opulence with his collection inspired by Egypt. Other notable designers were Franck Sorbier, Elie Saab and Guo Pei who were inspired by Mexico and the Himalayas respectively.

Taking Flight

Muchos diseñadores decidieron agregar un toque etéreo y de delicado movimiento utilizando plumas en sus diseños, definitivamente uno de los favoritos en la Alta Costura para aportar textura y un efecto tridimensional como lo hicieron Antonio Grimaldi, Valentino y Ralph & Russo. Otros diseñadores que también incluyeron plumas en variadas formas en sus colecciones fueron Alexis Mabille, Julien Fournie y Ulyana Sergeenko.

Many designers decided to add an ethereal touch and delicate movement using feathers in their designs, definitely a favorite in Haute Couture to provide texture and a three-dimensional effect as did Antonio Grimaldi, Valentino and Ralph & Russo. Other designers who also included feathers in various forms in their collections were Alexis Mabille, Julien Fournie and Ulyana Sergeenko.

Botanical Proportions

Es imposible pensar en la Alta Costura y no imaginarse las increíbles proporciones que los diseñadores crean con los textiles, creo que es esa parte de este elevado oficio que siempre da el toque fantasioso al que nos hemos acostumbrado. En esta ocasión escogí especialmente a Stephane Rolland, Schiaparelli y Givenchy pues no solo sus juegos de volumen fueron hermosos, y en algunos casos desafiaban la gravedad, sino que todos me recordaron en alguna medida formas florales con esa maravillosa mezcla de arquitectura y suavidad. Creo que el único otro diseñador que se acerco a crear algo parecido fue Giambattista Valli.

It is impossible to think about Haute Couture and not imagine the incredible proportions that designers create with textiles, I think it is that part of this high craft that always gives the fanciful touch we have become accustomed to. On this occasion I especially chose Stephane Rolland, Schiaparelli and Givenchy because not only their volume games were beautiful, and in some cases defied gravity, but they all reminded me in some measure of floral shapes with that wonderful mix of architecture and softness. I think the only other designer who came close to create something similar was Giambattista Valli.

Art Couture

Y siempre podemos encontrar a aquellos diseñadores que logran crear piezas que son genuinas obras de arte en las que se plasman técnicas ancestrales y/o tecnológicas llevando las posibilidades de la costura a un plano casi futurista. Yuima Nakazato empleó un método llamado Bio-smocking que le permite controlar digitalmente las fibras de la tela para amoldarlas a una forma deseada e incluso para entallar la misma sin tener que utilizar hilo y aguja. Iris Van Herpen utilizó sus ya conocidas técnicas de impresión tridimensional y corte a laser para volver a crear formas que desafían los sentidos; mientras que Rahul Mishra mostró la capacidad de los bordadores de su tierra creando diseños exuberantes que hacen honor no solo a su cultura sino a esta técnica insigne de la Alta Costura.

And we can always find those designers who manage to create pieces that are genuine works of art in which ancestral and / or technological techniques are embodied, taking the possibilities of sewing to an almost futuristic plane. Yuima Nakazato used a method called Bio-smocking that allows you to digitally control the fibers of the fabric to mold them to a desired shape and even to fit the body without having to use thread and needle. Iris Van Herpen used her well-known three-dimensional printing and laser cutting techniques to recreate shapes that defy the senses; while Rahul Mishra showed the ability of the embroiderers of his land creating lush designs that honor not only their culture but this flagship technique of Haute Couture.
