¡Hola a tod@s! Para la entrada de esta semana decidí hacer un segmento que incluí en el 2018 llamado PTY On Site, donde la meta es ir a diversos lugares en Panamá que tengan alguna relación histórica, artística y/o cultural con el país como una forma de resaltar la cultura panameña y también para crear espacios diversos en el blog. En el 2019 por varios motivos no pude hacer ninguna entrada de este segmento pero este año me he propuesto hacer al menos cuatro.
En esta ocasión pude visitar el nuevo Museo de la Mola (MUMO) que abrió sus puertas a finales del año pasado en la zona del Casco Antiguo. Las molas son de los trabajos artesanales indígenas más reconocidos y gustados de Panamá, conquistando a los visitantes y locales por sus hermosos colores, patrones y una técnica cuya elaboración es sin duda un complejo arte.
Las molas en la cosmovisión Guna fueron creadas en la cuarta capa del inframundo, un lugar sagrado llamado Galu Dugbis en el que solo una mujer nele logró entrar observando en el cielo figuras cambiantes aprendiendo así el arte ancestral de crear molas que eventualmente fue pasado a cada próxima generación de mujeres Guna.
Cada mola es única representando el conocimiento y técnica de la mujer que la crea, estas representan varias cosas desde animales, hasta objetos, figuras sagradas, rituales o elementos relacionados a diferentes tipo de energías que nos rodean.
Hello everyone! For the entry of this week I decided to make a segment that I included on 2018 called PTY On Site, where the goal is to go to various places in Panama that have some historical, artistic and/or cultural relationship with the country as a way to highlight the Panamanian culture and also to create diverse spaces in the blog. In 2019 for various reason I wasn´t able to produce a post for this segment but I am determined to do at least four this year so here we go.
On this occasion I was able to visit the new Mola Museum (MUMO) that opened its doors at the end of last year in the Old Quarter area. The molas are the most recognized and liked indigenous handicrafts in Panama, conquering visitors and locals for their beautiful colors, patterns and a technique whose elaboration is undoubtedly a complex art.
The molas in the Guna worldview were created in the fourth layer of the underworld, a sacred place called Galu Dugbis in which only a nele woman managed to enter observing in the sky changing figures thus learning the ancestral art of creating molas that was eventually passed to each next generation of Guna women.
Each mola is unique representing the knowledge and technique of the woman who creates it, these represent various things from animals, to objects, sacred figures, rituals or elements related to different types of energies that surround us.

Dependiendo de su complejidad pueden llega a tomar hasta seis meses en terminarse y entre mayor sea el número de capas utilizadas para su elaboración se considera que la mola es de la más alta calidad.

The Guna women's dress is also made up of other elements such as the knotted skirt at the waist in saburete, extensive chaquiras/beads in hands and legs (usually creating geometric patterns) and a scarf in the head of red and yellow color.
En la foto superior el hermoso trabajo terminado de una mola; en la foto inferior el reverso con las pequeñas y ordenadas costuras que forman parte de la complejidad de este arte textil. Las molas de alta calidad llevan puntadas casi invisibles. Debido a su proeza técnica las mujeres Guna suelen ser empleadas por diseñadores de moda en sus talleres.
In the photo above the beautiful finished work of a mola; in the photo below the reverse with the small and neat seams that are part of the complexity of this textile art. High quality molas have almost invisible stitches. Due to their technical prowess, Guna women are often employed by fashion designers in their workshops.
Estas figuras son Nussus, entidades protectoras que median entre los humanos y espíritus. Estas tallas de madera usualmente son realizadas por los hombres Guna quienes aparte del tallado también practican la cestería.
These figures are Nussus, protective entities that mediate between humans and spirits. These wood carvings are usually made by Guna men who, apart from carving, also practice basketry.
Tallado de un Aggebandur el cual es un amuleto de protección que llevan los gunas desde jóvenes y posee la forma de una flecha humana tallada de un pedazo de bejuco y que se tiñe con achiote para conferirle poder.
Carved from an Aggebandur which is a protective amulet worn by the gunas since they are young and has the shape of a human arrow carved from a piece of wood called bejuco and stained with annatto to confer power.
El Árbol de la Armonía, una hermosa instalación que cuenta con una diversidad de molas que resalta no solo el fantástico trabajo en ellas sino que también muestra distintas facetas figurativas que se aplican en las mismas.
The Tree of Harmony, a beautiful installation that has a diversity of molas that highlights not only the fantastic work in them but also shows the different figurative facets that are applied in their making.
El muro magnético le permite al visitante crear su propio patrón de mola y es una de las experiencias interactivas en el recorrido de la exposición.
The magnetic wall allows the visitor to create their own mola pattern and is one of the interactive experiences in the exhibition route.
Esta es una de las molas que me encantó ya que soy un gran fanático de los patrones geométricos y esta en particular por las formas además del hermoso juego de color llamo muchísimo mi atención.
This is one of the molas that I loved since I am a big fan of geometric patterns and this in particular because of the shapes in addition to the beautiful game of color just called my attention right away.
Sin duda una de las molas más complejas que vi, la forma como retrata lo que parece ser una escena cotidiana en la vida de la comunidad (esto lo asumo ya que la mola no explicaba que representaba) y el nivel de detalle sobre todo en la vestimenta de las mujeres es exquisita. Esto último también se repite en la imagen que abre esta entrada.
Undoubtedly one of the most complex molas I saw, the way it portrays what seems to be a daily scene in the life of the community (this I assume since the mola did not explain what it represented) and the level of detail especially in the Women's dress is exquisite. The latter is also repeated in the image that opens this entry.
Esta es otra de mis favoritas y a mi parecer rivaliza a la anterior en complejidad. Con esta en particular dos cosas llamaron mi atención la primera siendo los pequeños detalles que componen la figura pues se nota el increíble trabajo que lleva ademas de representar visualmente casi a la perfección la imagen de la cual se inspira. La segunda es más emocional pues jugar cartas era uno de los pasatiempos que compartía con mi abuela que falleció hace un par de años y es algo que siempre esta muy presente en mis buenos recuerdos de ella.
This is another of my favorites and in my opinion rivals the previous one in complexity. With this in particular two things caught my attention the first being the small details that make up the figure because it shows the incredible work that it takes in addition to visually representing almost perfectly the image from which it is inspired. The second is more emotional because playing cards was one of the hobbies I shared with my grandmother who passed away a couple of years ago and is something that is always very present in my good memories of her.
No hay mucho que decir de esta foto simplemente me encanta ver a los visitantes de otros países tomarse el tiempo de sentarse y apreciar con detenimiento el arte que viene de nuestra hermosa herencia cultural.
There is not much to say about this photo, I just love seeing visitors from other countries take the time to sit down and appreciate the art that comes from our beautiful cultural heritage.
Ojalá les haya gustado esta entrada tanto como a mi me encanto hacerla y espero que si no han asistido al museo los motive a ir pues es una muy bonita experiencia y ayuda a conocer más sobre la cultura Guna, al menos yo aprendí muchísimas cosas de las cuales no tenia idea. El museo es de entrada gratuita y abre de Martes a Domingo así que aprovechen el hermoso verano para darse una vuelta por el Casco Antiguo y visitar el MUMO.
I wish you liked this entry as much as I loved doing it and I hope that if you have not attended the museum it motivates you to go because it is a very beautiful experience and helps to know more about the Guna culture, at least I learned a lot of things from which I had no idea. The museum is free of charge and opens from Tuesday to Sunday so take advantage of the beautiful summer to stroll around the Old Quarter and visit the MUMO.
